Epic Systems, one of the nation’s largest EHR providers, is making a sweeping push into generative AI with nearly 200 new features. At its annual Users Group Meeting, CEO Judy Faulkner said AI is being built into “all features,” calling it “healthcare intelligence.”

Epic’s plan centers on intelligent assistants for patients, clinicians, and finance teams, along with deeper Microsoft integrations and new Cosmos AI models. The aim is to streamline care delivery, reduce administrative burdens, and support financial stability for health systems.

Emmie as a Patient Assistant in MyChart

Epic unveiled Emmie, a 24/7 patient-facing assistant inside the MyChart portal. Emmie explains lab results in plain language, recommends preventive screenings, helps with scheduling, and engages in open-ended conversations.

By drawing on the patient’s medical record and connected devices, Emmie offers self-service for routine health needs. Hospitals stand to benefit from reduced call volumes and stronger patient engagement between visits.

Art as a Clinician Co-Pilot

Epic also introduced Art, a clinician-facing assistant built directly into workflows. Art gathers data from Emmie to prepare pre-visit summaries, giving providers a head start before the encounter begins. During the visit, it drafts notes, summarizes patient histories, updates charts, and even handles administrative steps like prior authorization checks and order placement.

Tapping Epic’s Cosmos dataset, Art provides evidence-based decision support. For example, it can flag patterns across tens of thousands of similar cases, prompting providers to reconsider a diagnosis or treatment plan.

The goal is to reduce burnout and free up more time for direct patient care.

Penny for Revenue Cycle Management

On the financial side, Epic introduced Penny, an assistant for billing and revenue cycle management. Penny automates repetitive tasks such as drafting appeals for denied claims and suggesting billing codes based on documentation. By automating these steps, it can reduce reimbursement delays and administrative costs while improving billing accuracy.

For revenue cycle leaders, Penny signals Epic’s intent to bring AI directly into the financial core of healthcare operations.

Expanded Microsoft Partnership for AI Charting

Epic is expanding its Microsoft partnership by embedding Nuance’s Dragon Ambient eXperience into workflows, transcribing patient-provider conversations through Haiku and Canto mobile apps.

The output is draft clinical notes, giving Epic a native AI scribe option and reducing reliance on third-party vendors. Hospitals running Epic should expect future upgrades that simplify charting through built-in ambient documentation.

Cosmos AI for Predictive Care

Epic is developing new foundation models on its Cosmos dataset, which includes de-identified records for more than 300 million patients and over a trillion data points. One of these is the Cosmos Medical Event Transformer (CoMET), created with Microsoft and Yale. These models analyze disease progression and outcomes, helping predict risks such as readmission or heart attack and supporting earlier, preventive care.

Because they are trained on real-world clinical data, these predictive tools give providers evidence-based insights to support earlier intervention and stronger population health management.

What This Means for Providers

Epic’s announcements show AI is now central to its EHR strategy, spanning patient engagement, clinical workflows, and financial operations. The tools target burnout, billing inefficiencies, and population health gaps while helping providers strengthen care and financial stability in a competitive environment.
